ICW Get Him to the Union Review – 12/10/18

About a week after the last show, ICW leaves its usual home of the Garage for the Glasgow University Union to celebrate it’s 12th Anniversary.  Would two shows so close together damper people’s enjoyment of the show let’s see?

It was a later start time of 8pm when most shows try to start between 7 and 7:30. I likes the set up better in the union. From certain angles it looked like the set up they have in the Garage with balconies. However, this looked more polished as opposed to the grunge nightclub look of the Garage. Billy Kirkwood even referenced the difference saying they were live from Downton Abby.

It’s more spacious than the Garage is sometimes. Maybe there were just less people at this show but at times at the Garage shows it can feel like people are packed in. There was still easy access to a bar, so people were still happy.

The Kinky Party vs The Fite Network for the ICW Tag Team Championships

Fite Network jump Kinky Party as the try to finish their pre-match drinks. Jester lifts Lou King Sharp in a delayed suplex as he yells put me down. Krieger tried to interfere despite not being the legal man The assisted tombstone helps the Kinky Party retain.

Winner: Kinky Party

After the match Sha Samuels confesses that neither him or Jack Jester went to university before they crowd surf to the bar.

Where was Kid Fite to help Lou and Krieger? They’re his students surely, he’d try to help them out. He’s the Fite in Fite network

I think a squash match is the best way to describe this. Why Fite Network even got a title shot when Kinky party have lost to Alpha Evil in singles matches the last couple shows. Booking 101 suggests that should make Alpha Evil the number 1 contenders. Feels like they’re stretching out that feud unnecessarily.

Grado vs Kez Evans

Grado came out to Like A Prayer which was a surprise. He used it when he returned at Shug’s Hoose Party which make sense as it’s his big return. Since then he hasn’t which I assumed was due to copyright reasons. Maybe it was for one night as it’s the anniversary show and Grado has been a big part of the company mostly due to his entrance.

Grado cuts a promo going through all the big moments he’s been involved in like beating Red Lightning before the decision was reversed, winning the world title from Drew Galloway and his return at Shug’s. He moves onto James Strom when Kez Evans jumps him.

Evans grounds him for the early part. Grado powers out of an attempt of the piledriver.  He hits a of clotheslines followed by the bionic elbow. The RGradO gives Grado the win.

Winner: Grado

Evans hits Grado with a chair after the match when Red Lightning comes out. He says refutes the idea that Grado beat him. He challenges Grado to a match on November 25th in Aberdeen.

I think Kez joining Rudo would be the best thing for him. Red coming back for a match is so random especially so close to the Hydro. He been semi-retired for some time now I’m more use to seeing him as a manager than as a wrestler. If he was coming back to the ring, then surely doing it in the hydro at the biggest show of the year makes more sense. I would happily see this as a match at Fear & Loathing. Nothing against James Storm.

Aivil vs Kasey

I missed the start of this match because I was at the bar but from what I heard Kasey attack Aivil during her entrance. Kasey’s manager Wee Man yelled at a guy in the crowd for being on his phone during the match which made me laugh. Aivil hit a spear and looked to finish with the submission when the Wee Man hit her with the bat. A running Knee to the face gives Kasey the win.

Winner: Kasey

Kasey continues to beat up Jokey after the match as Wee Man keeps the ref out flashing his managers license. Mikey Whiplash comes through the crowd to ward them off.

This is the women’s division equivalent of Undertaker vs Triple H last time ever but not really. Both these women are great but they’re going nowhere just fighting each other. Nice to be reminded that Aivil is part of legion.

The Purge vs The Govan Team: Street Fight

The street fight stipulation came out of nowhere and was suggested by Ravie Davie who claimed the Purge (Krowbar & Stevie James) were being given too many opportunities. Purge took exception and were looking to teach Davie and his cousin Xander a lesson. Considering ICW doesn’t operate under traditional wrestling rules the fact it specified as a street fight implied this would be a violent affair.

All four men wore street clothes for this match. Davie hit a moonsault to the outside onto everyone.  Stevie gets powerbombed off the middle rope through a table. Krowbar actually used a Crowbar imagine.

Purge beat up Davie throwing him through a double door. They double chokeslam Xander into thumbtacks. Davie dived off the balcony but the Purge move causing him to crash and burn. Assisted piledriver to Xander on a chair secures the win for The Purge.

Winner: The Purge

I was standing under the balcony where Davie dived so all I could hear was some commotion then just saw Davie falling through the air.

Fair play to the Govan team for the beating they took. I feel like ICW tries to come up for new ways to kill Davie. First Bram, then James Strom and now the Purge have tried to kill him.

The Purge looked strong which I think will help them on the road to the Hydro. This establishes them as more as the guys who hang out with Wolfgang but are a more than capable force in their own right. After seeing this match and their victory at the last show I’m more into that rumoured match of them and Wolfgang vs British Strong Style at Fear & Loathing.

BT Gunn, Dickie Divers & Viper vs The Filthy Generation (Kay Lee Ray, Lewis Girven and Aspen Faith)

Kay Lee refused to get in the ring with Viper. There was a hilarious spot with everyone pointing imaginary guns at each other until Lewis threw an imaginary grenade. Viper impressively hits a Canadian destroyer. BT hit a double springboard cutter to the kings of catch. Kings of Catch & Kay Lee won I believe by Kay Lee rolling up Viper

Winners: Filthy Generation

Whenever Kay Lee or the Kings of Catch (Lewis & Aspen) come out they still announced as representing the filthy generation. They haven’t really acknowledged why they’re still together even after Stevie Boy left. I thought since he was the leader the team would disband. I wish we had a reason why they were still together.

It’s weird to see Divers being featured again in ICW. He used to be a major player in the company but nowadays he’s sparsely used. Seeing him and Gunn together was shades of their days as part of the NAK some years ago.

I liked that Kay Lee wanted nothing to do with Viper before their big women’s title match at the Hydro.

The Gun sequence reminded me why I love wrestling because sometimes it can be serious but can also be ridiculous. Great match to ger people back into the second half after that excellent street fight.

Kieran Kelly vs Leyton Buzzard for Kieran’s 24/7 Hydro contract

Not sure I’ve covered it but after Kieran became part of the roster he was given a contract for a match at Fear & Loathing. A contract that could be defended 24/7. So online there have been skits of Kieran trying to hold on to the contract. These include Thatcher Wright attacking him at a urinal or Lou King Sharp & Krieger arguing over who would pin him allowing him to escape. Reminds me of Crash Holly’s Hardcore title shenanigans.

The match was very fast paced. Both exchange chops to the chest. Kelly hit a dive to the outside. Leyton hit a stunner while Kieran came back with a fall away slam. They both duck kicks before kicking each other at the same time. Leyton counters a sunset flip with a sit-down pin for the win.

Winner: Leyton Buzzard

Dallas comes out referencing that Whiplash trained Kieran and since Whiplash doesn’t think the rules apply to him they don’t apply here and tears up the contract. Whiplash comes out but is taken out by security.

A great match from two of ICW’s up incoming stars. Actually, the match I was most looking forward to. I wanted this at the hydro but there’s still a chance. I liked the use of Renfrew and Hendry’s finishers a call back to that feud which made both men.

Liam Thompson vs Just Justice Jackie Polo for the ICW World Heavyweight Championship

There were clips on demand of Liam trying to come up with the funds to pay the bounty to earn a title shot. He was loaned the money by Kid Fite after putting his sink up as collateral

Jackie’s Manager Coach Trip made sure to count the money before the match started. Liam dives out on Jackie who catches him and throws him back in the ring. Jackie comes off the top when Liam catches him in the gut with a knee. Sink shots and the backstabber still don’t keep Jackie down. Jackie tries the headlock that won him the title but Liam fights out. As Liam is on the top Jackie throws the sink at his head. A shoulder breaker secures the win for Jackie.

Winner: Just Justice Jackie Polo

After the match Lionheart comes out and offers to put his career on the line for a shot at the title at Fear & Loathing. Jackie says if he also pays a bounty of £5000 he’s got a deal. They shake hands and Lionheart hits Ur A Fanny to close the show.

Quite a slow match for the most part. It felt like they kept going for the same spot towards the end like the sink and the shoulder breaker. I’m quickly realising that Jackie isn’t as good with everyone as he is with Lionheart. It feels like that the If I can’t win I’ll leave stipulation is used a lot but it works here because it was the only way Lionheart could get Jackie to take the match.

I wonder if Fite will refuse to give Liam his sink back, so he’ll have to fight for it again at the Hydro. I’d be up for Good House Keeping 3

I really enjoyed this show. In my opinion one of the best fight clubs of the year because it was just fun. Nothing for the Hydro made official other than the main event but they way the show was laid out it was fun enough that I didn’t mind.

I do hope their next show on the 11th of November will set up the final pieces of the Fear & Loathing card like who British Strong Style or The Briscoes are fighting or if Aron Echo and Kenny Williams will ever blow off their feud. I think the Kings of Catch are the most likely to face the Briscoes.

The focus wasn’t on setting things up but rather celebrating a milestone for ICW. I wouldn’t mind seeing them go back to the union for the reason I mentioned at the start of this review.
