History of ICW Square Go Winners: Wolfgang

The fifth annual Square go took place at the Barrowlands Ballroom on January 24th, 2016. On the same night NAK leader Chris Renfrew cashed in the 2015 case to win the ICW world title his stablemate Wolfgang would win the Square Go. Entering the match at number 21 and tossing out an exhausted Joe Coffey who had been in since number 1 to win the match. There was a moment after the match when the two came together.

Upon Renfrew showing his allegiance to Mark Dallas Wolfgang along with Stevie Boy & Kay Lee Ray would leave the NAK. Wolfgang would join the Black Label while Stevie and Kay Lee would form the Filthy Generation.

At Shug’s Hoose Party 3 Joe Coffey would defeat Big Damo to win the ICW world title. As Damo walked up the ramp to let Joe have his moment he was attacked by the Black Label. This allowed Wolfgang to walk out with a ref to cash in. He hit the gut buster followed by the howling Swanton, but Joe somehow had enough to kick out. Joe hit a lariat but Red would distract the ref. While the ref dealt with Red Wolfgang would get brass knucks and use them to pick up the win.

Wolfgang would carry the title into Fear & Loathing 9 the first show from the hydro and defend it in a steel cage match against Trent Seven. Despite not being ICW long Seven had become very over with the fans and was on a campaign to be in the world title match at the Hydro. Ultimately forced Red Lighting to grant him the match when he had Wolfgang tied in the ropes threatening to knock his teeth out with his own knucks.

Fun fact: Fear & Loathing 9 was the first ICW show I ever attended so I saw this match live. I wanted to go to a show back in 2013 but wasn’t old enough.

The positioning of this match foretold the ending of this match. This came on before two other big matches: an 8-man elimination tag for control of the company & Joe Coffey vs Kurt Angle. The latter ended up being the main event.

Both men sat on top of the cage exchanging right hands. Seven made a mistake hitting Wolfgang with his own knucks that sent him tumbling to the outside through a table. This meant Seven inadvertently helped Wolfgang retain. You could kind of see things might not go Seven’s way as the title wasn’t the main event. If this wasn’t going to be Seven’s moment, they likely didn’t want to have the show end on dower note.

Seven would earn another shot in February at the Square Go. A brutal match which featured a lot of crowd brawling and Seven being thrown off the stage. Wolfgang hit a howling to the back but Seven kicked out. A fittingly brutal finish to this match with Seven hitting a piledriver from the middle rope onto some chairs to win the championship.

Wolfgang wasn’t finished on this night as he would attack Liam Thompson taking his spot in the Square Go match and his sink. He came close to winning back to back Square Go’s before being eliminated by the eventual winner. Stay tuned to see who that was.
