ICW Fight Club February 3rd Review

Only a few weeks until the 2019 Square Go ICW makes one more stop in the Garage. While I wasn’t able to attend last months fight club, I’ve kept up through ICW on demand and their social media so I’m up to date on what I missed.

Billy Kirkwood killed the crowd with a bit where he had small mannequin hands. A simple bit and doesn’t seem that funny but you had to be there. Had Simon Cassidy dying and made him forget what the first match was.

SmithGirvan

Ashton Smith (With the Wee Man) vs Lewis Girvan (With Aspen Faith)

Lewis went right after Smith reigning with right hands. He hits a suicide dive to the outside. Looks to follow up with springboard but is caught with the superkick. Smith uses his strength advantage clubbing blows to the back. At on point smith hit a springboard cutter. Lewis countered an Irish whip springing off the ropes with a cutter of his own.

There was a bit of an injury scare as Lewis favoured his leg after coming off the top. He favoured the leg again after hitting a tombstone preventing him from following up. It looks like Lewis has it won with a neckbreaker when the Wee Man pulls out the ref. Faith chases the Wee Man to the back. Ashton hits a boot followed up with the ripcord DDT for the win.

Winner: Aspen Faith

Some classic WWE booking appearing here with different sides of a feuding tag team facing off in a singles match. Better than Aspen vs Rampage last month but that may because Aspen suffered a miner injury during the match. I also think Lewis and Ashton match up better as Ashton will being the bigger man can still pull-out high-flying moves. As this match showcased.

EchoRudo

Red Lighting vs Aaron Echo

At the last show Red was one of the first people to declare himself for the Square Go match.

Red seemed to take any opportunity to cheat going for the eyes and hanging Echo neck first off, the top rope. Echo slams Red’s face into the apron on the outside before unloading with body shots in the corner. He hit a low blow which Echo responded with a discuss forearm. Before the match can get going Ravie Davie, Kez Evans and Leyton Buzzard attack Echo forcing the ref to call the match.

No contest

Dallas said this was in response Echo attacking Leyton on fight club a few weeks ago. They offered Red the opportunity to finish the job but Red refused. Dallas said this was a warning to anyone who tried crossed them.

Can’t really say a lot about the match as it never properly got going. What Red did after the match ties in nicely to something that I’ll go into more detail later.

CoffeyRobbo

Paul Robinson vs Joe Coffey for the ICW Zero G Championship

Robinson took his time getting in the ring which the crowd gave him shit for. He went for the springboard moonsault but Joe caught him. Joe used his size and strength to bring him down with the full nelson. The crossbody is avoided allowing Robinson to hit a series of kicks.

Robinson attempts a shooting star press managing to roll through when Joe moved. He gets back up on the middle rope and hits a spear. Joe sends him into the corner with a shoulder tackle and hits a pop up rolling death valley driver. He gets out of a variation of a crossface Robinson gets in after countering All the best for the bells. He holds Paul in a styles clash position in a version of a crab.

Winner: Joe Coffey

I was surprised because this match was promoted as a non-title match then Simon announces it as being for the title. Not complaining as I’m glad to actually see the Zero G title defended.

First time I’ve seen Paul Robinson live. I knew who he was and how much of a part he was in Progress. Unique finish with the submission. Took me a while to figure out what was happening as Joe’s back was to my side, so I thought he was setting up for some sort of piledriver but then just stood there. It was only when Paul tapped that I realised what it was.

KennyPax

Paxxo vs Kenny Williams

Williams took to the mic before the match talking about wanting to take ICW back to the glory days. He said the company is being held down by “forever trainees” like Paxxo. He tells Paxxo he won’t be a forever trainee after this match because he will give him an opportunity before hitting him with the mic.

Paxxo makes a comeback hitting a sit out spinebuster. Williams hits a roll through facebuster. Paxxo goes to the top before being kicked to the outside. Kenny picked up the win.

Winner: Kenny Williams

After the match I felt someone bump into me which to turned to be one of three men in masks who would jump the barricade and attack Paxxo.

I was speculating with the group I go to these shows who it could be under the masks. The masks covered their face, but you could see their hair. We speculated the one with dark hair was Craig Anthony, the one with blonde hair was Grant McIvor and the third was Scott McManus. Purely speculation on our part we could totally be wrong.

The match itself was kind of a nothing match. Felt ICW were taking of advantage of the fact Kenny was actually available.

KLRROX

Little Miss Roxxy vs Kay Lee Ray for the ICW World Women’s Championship

Ray gives Roxxy the opportunity to just walk away because she has something important to say. It looks like Roxxy is going to leave only to attack Ray from behind.

Roxxy hits a wicked headbutt. She attempts to sunset flip Ray into the corner with a chair set up. Ray manages to hold her ground and prevent the move. Ray hits the dirty bomb only gets a two. She goes to the top when Roxxy sends her crashing to the outside through a table that had been set up earlier. Rolls her back in the ring and hits the sunset flip into the chair in the corner.

I like most of the crowd thought that was going to be it but Ray kicks out. Roxxy unloads with chair shots. She locks in a muta lock which Ray counters powering out and hitting the dirty bomb on the chair.

Winner: Kay Lee Ray

We never get to hear what Ray had to say but I assume she was going to announce her match at the Square Go. Instead they announced it on social media that Ray will defend the title against Toni Storm.

Took a while to get going but I really enjoyed this match as a whole. Another really creative finish. Roxxy went all Austin at Mania 17 with that chair. This would have been good enough for Square Go but it seemed like they wanted to get it out of the way so they can have the Storm match.

Mid-way through the show Simon Cassidy announced that on May 26th & 27th ICW would be holding its first ever Trios tournament called the King of Hawners.

ICWKOH

When I heard the 2 dates, I thought they were moving up Shugs Hoose Party. An interesting concept which I have a suspicion Mikey Whiplash had a hand in as he said in a interview a while back he thought ICW should be doing more tournaments. Can’t wait to see who they get to be part of the tournament. They’ve already confirmed Bad Company, More Than Hype and the Anti Fun Police.

WildRavie.jpg

Kez Evans, Ravie Davie & Leyton Buzzard vs Kieran Kelly & Andy Wild

This match stemmed from Wild cutting a scathing promo on Dallas’s choice of stars and the fact he fired Kieran. Wild demanded a tag match whereby if he and Kelly won, they would earn a spot in the Square Go match. Dallas agreed adding the stipulation that if Wild’s team lost Wild would be fired too.

Kez was added to the match because Dallas felt Wild counted as two people, so it was unfair to Leyton and Davie. Wild & Kelly started off hot with Wild launching Kelly to the outside. Kelly finds him stuck in the heel corner. Leyton went to the top but took to long so Kez tagged himself in. Perhaps the loudest pop of the night when Kelly was finally able to make the hot tag to Wild.

Wild takes it to all three guys even hitting a splash on all of them in the corner. Kelly hit a springboard codebreaker on Leyton which Wild follows up with a gutrench powerbomb. It looked like the end, but Davie manages to break up the pin. The Purge come out and take out Kez and Davie leaving Leyton alone in the ring. Superkick from Kelly powerbomb from Wild allows them to pick up the win.

Winners: Andy Wild & Kieran Kelly

Wild and Kelly celebrate through the crowd. Dallas is furious saying they only won a battle but won’t win the war. He threatens to make the Purge’s life hell and said there was no one who had the guts to come face to face with him. This brings out Red Lightning to a great pop. He tells Kez, Leyton & Davie to back up as he is on of their coaches in GPWA saying Dallas might help them one Sunday a month, but they can breathe in this business unless he says so. He talks about the years he and Dallas have been advisory’s and how he always said he was the good guy and Dallas was the bad guy. Dallas tries to say Red doesn’t have it anymore to which Red says he will win the Square Go and be the face of the company and there’s nothing Dallas can do.

Wild has been a fan favourite for a while but I don’t think I’ve heard people be louder for him than this shows. He and Kelly gelled well for their first time as a team. The Red lighting seemingly turning face is very interesting because he’s been a heel for so long. As I’ve covered before he was even a top heel. I’ve seen shows where he couldn’t finish his promo because of how loudly he was being booed and to go from that to being treated as the hero here. It’s really the same story but the roles are reversed now.

DunneJest

No Fun Dunne vs Jack Jester

Dunne runs down the crowd for having to much fun. He said there will be no more using weapons, no more alcohol and no more foul language. He says there won’t be a match as Sha Samuels has been placed on a no-fly list. Jack Jester rushes to the ring and the ref rings the bell.

Jester hits an Alabama slam. Santos keeps interfering at any opportunity. Dunne gets the roll up after Santos hits Jester behind the refs back.

Winner: No Fun Dunne

I’m not entirely sure if it was a one on one or a handicap match because Santos kept getting involved. Apparently, Sha wasn’t there because he was on the World of Sport tour which is the same reason Hendry wasn’t there. I do think the Anti Fun Police are a perfect fit for ICW.

CoffeyLT

Liam Thompson vs Mark Coffey

Much of the match was made up both guys exchanging holds and strikes. Mark hits a sliding forearm. Thompson manages to hit the backstabber but Mark rolls to the other side of the ring. At this point the three masked men returned and attacked Thompson. Mark finishes the job with the Enziguri.

Winner: Mark Coffey

This and the Jester match seemed to bring the crowd down before the main event. I wonder where this story with the masked men is going. I hope to see them in the King of Hawners or play apart in the Square Go.

Jody Fleisch vs Lionheart for the ICW World Heavyweight Championship

Jody was originally advertised to face Wolfgang, but it turned Wolfgang wasn’t cleared. Without an opponent Lionheart recognising Jody’s accomplishments offered him this title shot.

There was a feeling out process with a headlock exchange and both men kipping up at the same time. Jody hits a dropkick only for Lionheart to hit one of his own. At one-point Jody hits a Spanish fly which you would have missed if you blinked it was that quick Jody sends Lionheart over the barricade before diving into the crowd.

Lionheart catches Jody when he went for the 720 DDT and hits the Ur a Fanny. Jody manages to hit the 720 but only gets 2. Looks to follow up with a shooting star press when Lionheart catches him with a cutter in mid-air. A second Ur A Fanny followed by the frog splash allows Lionheart to retain.

Winner: Lionheart

After the match Lionheart praised Jody as well as the likes of Doug Williams who kept British wrestling alive between both boom periods. He thanks Jody saying this was a dream match for him and gave him the ring. Jody thanked the fans for their support as it makes him feel good even when he doesn’t win that often in ICW. He says with the likes of Lionheart about British wrestling is in great hands as the crowd pay him the respect he deserves.

I’ll be honest Jody being announced for this show was what made me buy a ticket for this show. That was before it was announced that he would challenge Lionheart. It’s great that he got to have that moment at the end. How Jody isn’t signed to WOS or NXT UK blows my mind. An excellent main event to a very eventful evening. That shooting star into the cutter was probably the best spot of the match because the timing was just spot on.

Probably the best fight club I’ve been to since I started attending ICW more frequently. In mid-2018 in the lead up to the hydro there was a series of fight clubs where it felt like not a lot happened but here so much happened. Red turned face, there were three great title matches, Kelly and Wild secured their spot in the Square Go and there’s 3 masked men attacking people. All this creates so many possibilities and questions going into the Square Go. Given this is their last show before the Square Go, they did a good job of getting you excited heading into it.
